Scapular of St. Joseph (Sacramental)
-article by Danny Beauchamp

Did you know that St. Joseph has various sacramentals blessed by Holy Mother Church in his name and honor?

One of these sacramentals is the very famous Scapular of St. Joseph!  This scapular honors St. Joseph by reminding us of his three principal virtues: humility, modesty and purity! It also reminds us to pray to him continously, asking him to pray for Holy Mother Church and for the graces of a happy death!  The front of the scapular depicts an image of St. Joseph carrying the infant Jesus in one arm, and a lily in the other hand while underneath an inscription says:Sancte Ioseph, Protector Ecclesiae, ora pro nobis” (Saint Joseph, Protector of the Church, pray for us). The back of the scapular features an image of the Papal Arms, a dove (to symbolize the Holy Ghost) and a Cross while underneath an inscription says: “Spiritus Domini Ductor ejus (The Spirit of the Lord leads him).

This wonderful scapular traces its roots to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins in St. Claude in France and was initially in white. The Capuchins spread this devotion around France and in the Church. Later, the Scapular of St. Joseph became purple with white and gold colors as established by the Capuchins of Verona, Italy. The bands are white.  The Scapular of St. Joseph was approved for the Diocese of Verona by a Decree of the Congregation of Rites on the 8 July, 1880. After becoming very popular with the faithful and the numerous blessings received through this scapular, it was later approved for the whole Church by the Congregation of Rites on 18 April, 1893. His Holiness, Pope Leo XIII, granted to the General of the Capuchins the faculty of blessing and investing the faithful everywhere with this scapular.

Various indulgences have been granted for all the faithful who wear it by a Rescript of the Congregation for Indulgences on the 8 June 1893 (“Acta S. Sedis”, XXXIV, 317). There is a plenary indulgence for those who confess, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father on the following feast days: the day of investment of the scapular, 25 December , 1 January, 6 January, 2 February, 19 March, 25 March, Easter, Feast of the Ascension, 15 August, 8 September, 8 December, 3rd Sunday after Easter and at the time of death.  It is recommended to say 5 Our Fathers, 5 Hail Marys and 5 Glory bes in front of the Blessed Sacrament on those days.

St. Clement Gift Shop and Bookstore is proud to sell you this wonderful Scapular of St. Joseph at an affordable price! Please contact Fern Harrison, book store manager (harrisonfern@gmail.com) for your Scapular of St. Joseph, today! Curb side pick up also available at the Parish.

  1. St. Joseph Fun Fact: The wedding ring that St. Joseph gave to the blessed Mother still exists today! It is called the “Santo Anello” (Holy Band) and is located in a special gold and silver reliquary in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia, Italy! Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, unaware that the ring still existed,  received the following visions:

Vision of July 29, 1821:   “I saw the Blessed Virgin’s wedding ring; it is neither of silver nor of gold, nor of any other metal; it is dark in color and iridescent; it is not a thin narrow ring, but rather thick and at least a finger broad. I saw it smooth and yet as if covered with little regular triangles in which were letters. On the inside was a flat surface. The ring is engraved with something. I saw it kept behind many locks in a beautiful church. Devout people about to be married take their wedding-rings to touch it.”

Vision of August 3, 1821: “In the last few days I have seen much of the story of Mary’s wedding-ring, but as the result of disturbances and pain I can no longer give a connected account of it. Today I saw a festival in a church in Italy where the wedding-ring is to be found. It seemed to me to be hung up in a kind of monstrance which stood above the Tabernacle. There was a large altar there, magnificently decorated, one saw deep into it through much silverwork. I saw many rings being held against the monstrance. During the festival I saw Mary and Joseph appearing in their wedding garments on each side of the ring, as if Joseph were placing the ring on the Blessed Virgin’s finger. At the same time I saw the ring shining and as if in movement.”

Sleeping St. Joseph (Devotional Statue)

-Article by Danny Beauchamp

Do you find yourself having trouble sleeping? Are you worried about finding work, paying your bills on time? Are you financially strapped? Are you going through difficulties in discerning a vocation? Difficulties in the spiritual life? Are you worried about many things?  Place your trust in the most just of men who will bring it to Jesus for you: Sleeping Saint Joseph himself! Although the origins of this devotion are not well known, it has increased in recent years. Many faithful Catholics are writing their intentions on a piece of paper and placing it under the statue of Sleeping St. Joseph to obtain his intercession and the answer to their prayers and petitions. But why a “sleeping” St. Joseph?   Three times in Holy Scriptures, God spoke to St. Joseph in his dreams (while sleeping): Matthew 1:24, Matthew 2:13-14, Matthew 2:19-21. St. Joseph was always prompt in accomplishing the Holy Will of God in obedience and this was always done in perfect trust and confidence. This is why we must turn to St. Joseph under his title of “Sleeping St. Joseph” because even while in sleep, our holy patron prayed, obeyed, trusted and therefore is powerful to obtain our petitions! He was blessed amongst men and received abundant graces whether awake or asleep!

“In vain is your earlier rising, your going later to rest, you who toil for the bread you eat: when he pours gifts on his beloved while they slumber.” —Psalm 127:2

“Go to Joseph with extreme confidence, because I do not remember having asked anything from St. Joseph, without having obtained it readily.” —St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

St. Clement Bookstore is proud to sell to you a beautiful stone resin devotional statue (8.3 x 21 x 5.7 cm) of Sleeping St. Joseph from Joseph Studio Renaissance Collection! Contact Fern Harrison, book store manager (harrisonfern@gmail.com) for your statue, today! Curb side pick up also available at the Parish.

  1. St. Joseph Fun Facts: In Anonas, Quezon City, in the Philippines is found at the Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph, a very big statue of Sleeping St. Joseph! The faithful may kneel in front of it and place their hands upon the statue’s hand to pray for St. Joseph’s powerful intercession! (See picture of this statue from the shrine above!)
